The enigmatic marks and their landscape settings
Carved between 4,000 and 5,000 years ago, these cup-and-ring marks and other graphic elements are among the most enigmatic forms of prehistoric expression. I explore their shapes, patterns, and placement in the landscape, revealing how natural rock features influenced their design, and how these carvings were carefully composed. But this isn’t just about what we see. Using archaeological evidence, I consider how these designs were created, pecked into stone with quartz hammerstones, bringing sound, light, and even sparkling fragments into the act of carving. These were not static images, but dynamic experiences.
